Everything you need to know: weight capacity, material, bed fit, install type, and which models work for F-150, F-250, and Ranger.
The first question to answer is weight capacity. Ladder racks range from 330 lbs (light aluminum models) up to 1,000+ lbs (heavy steel commercial racks). For a single 20-foot fiberglass extension ladder, you're looking at 30–45 lbs. Add a stepladder and a few boards and you're pushing 100–150 lbs. Most homeowners and light commercial users are fine with a 400 lb aluminum rack. Contractors hauling full aluminum extension ladders, scaffolding planks, or PVC pipe daily should go for 800 lbs or more.
Ford F-150s come in three bed lengths: 5.5 ft (SuperCrew), 6.5 ft (SuperCab/SuperCrew), and 8 ft (Regular Cab work truck). The Ford Ranger has a 5 ft bed. F-250s typically come in 6.75 ft and 8 ft. Most universal racks adjust to fit multiple bed widths. Check that your specific bed length is listed in the rack's compatibility specs — this is the most common mistake buyers make.
Steel racks are heavier (typically 60–80 lbs) but handle extreme loads. They're built for contractors who load and unload multiple times a day. Aluminum racks are lighter (20–40 lbs), won't rust, and are easier to install. For most Ford F-150 owners, aluminum is the better choice — you're not near the payload limit and the lighter weight is a plus. For Ford F-250 and Super Duty owners hauling serious material weight, steel's structural advantage is worth the extra mass.
The best ladder racks for Ford trucks use stake pocket mounts or clamp systems — no drilling required. This keeps your bed in resale condition and makes removal and repositioning easy. If you need absolute maximum strength and you'll never remove the rack, a drill-mount is stronger. But for 99% of uses, a quality no-drill system (like the TracRac's clamp system) is completely sufficient.
The Ford Ranger has a 5-foot bed — shorter than F-150s. Not all universal racks adjust down to 5 ft. Make sure the rack you buy explicitly lists 5 ft or "mid-size" compatibility. The ECCPP rack in our comparison is specifically designed for mid-size beds and is our top Ranger pick. The YAKIMA OverHaul HD also fits the Ranger with the right bed clips.
